Learning Through Pictures

  Although some may see art as an “extra” activity, creative behaviors are an important part of a child’s learning process. For young children making art, or even just talking about it, helps their brain learn words for things or actions. The experience of making decisions and choices while creating art helps children have a richer learning experience and to recall previously learned material more easily. This is due to “cues” or reminders that children get from pictures or other visuals. Studies show that there is a correlation between art and achievement in other areas. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts (three hours a day on three days each week through one full year) are four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate. So.. Why should we include art projects in our Chinese curriculum? In essence, art can make any curriculum more accessible. Art activities can appeal to a wide variety of learning styles or even learning disabilities. Creative projects can encourage joyful and active learning, which is important in maintaining children’s interest. When such activities allow students to make personal connections with the curriculum, student performance can increase ten-fold!

  Simple math vocabulary in Mandarin.

Mandarin Vowel Sounds

When students are first learning Mandarin, it is important to give them a foundation. A great place to start is with exploring the different tones with vowel sounds. In these visual projects, students explored one vowel sound a week. Each project included a vocabulary word in pinyin with a picture. At the bottom of each sheet is the same vowel in different tones. Beginning students often practice pronouncing one after the other several times since so much of Mandarin is hearing, not just memorizing.
